Natural Remedies for ear infections

Child in pain with ear infection

Ear Infections - ouch!

Ok so if you’re reading this then I’m going to keep it short because I’m guessing you’re here because you or your child is in pain with an ear infection and you want instant relief!

The good news is that Homeopathy is excellent in assisting with the acute pain caused by middle ear infections (Otitis Media).

Homeopathy can also be successfully used in helping those that suffer from long term ear infections (more of a chronic condition) or from a condition like glue ear. In fact this is how I came to Homeopathy - through the successful treatment of my son’s chronic ear infections and glue ear.

Here’s what you can do….Homeopathic remedies

Top 5 homeopathic remedies for ear infections

Here are my top 5 remedies for ear infections

  • Aconite

  • Belladonna

  • Chamomilla

  • Pulsatilla

  • Mercurius

Deciding which remedy to give depends entirely on the symptom picture that is showing. Look at the remedies below and see which one matches most closely and try it.

Aconite

  • Sudden onset acute ear pain after exposure to cold wind

  • Good for early stages of ear infections (or any fever or flu)

  • The patient will be very fearful, anxious, restless and frantic

  • Exquisite pain especially in the L side

  • One cheek is pale the other red (Chamomila)

  • Flushed face with great thirst

Belladonna

  • Sudden onset of ear infections with pulsing unbearable ear pain

  • Terrible throbbing pains especially the right side

  • Often worse at 3pm or at night after midnight

  • The patient will be screaming with pain and better from warm wraps

  • The ear may be red and hot to touch

  • Often associated with a very high fever red face, glassy eyes and dilated pupils

  • They may be delirious

Chamomilla

  • Very very painful otitis (ear infections)

  • The patient screams, cries out and wants the pain to stop IMMEDIATELY

  • They are angry and cross and screaming and may want to be carried

  • May want many things but will reject them when given

  • Worse from touching the ear - hates to be touched

  • Better being carried, warm wrapping and motion

  • One cheek red and hot and the other pale and cold

Pulsatilla

  • The direct opposite to Chamomila!

  • Soft, weepy and crying - even though the pain is unbearable - they are soft with it

  • Feels as though it is all stopped up and that something is being forced outwards

  • As if something were crawling in the ear

  • Pain < at night

  • Pain is shooting down to teeth and worse in a warm bed

  • Often can feel better outside in the open air

Mercurius

  • For acute and recurrent otitis media - with lots of suppuration (discharge) from the ears

  • More often a right sided ear pain

  • Yellow-green offensive discharge from the ear

  • There may be inflammation of the external ear canal along with the infection

  • Worse at night, worse damp weather, worse swallowing

  • The patient may be very sweaty and have lots of excess saliva and a very smelly breath!

How to dose

Dosing of Homeopathic remedies

There are many different approaches to dosing in Homeopathy as well as many differing opinions on potency (strength) of remedy. However I have found the following dosing to work really well. As the illness is acute it is moving quickly so we need to match this with repetition of dose to keep on top of it.

For home use I recommend using a 30c or 200c potency of either pillules or drops.

Give 3 drops or pillules every 15 minutes for the FIRST HOUR, then give 3 drops or pillules every 2-3 hours after that. Obviously if your child has fallen asleep after the remedy (a good response), you don’t need to wake them to give more.

After 12 hours (more often much much sooner - in fact often straight away you see a response) - if there has been no improvement then the remedy is not the correct remedy and you need to look at changing it.

The patient should get pain relief relatively quickly and that is a good sign things are working.

I was taught years ago, how to make onion ear compresses. These work really well alongside the Homeopathic remedies and provide beautiful relief from ear pain. Oftentimes the children will end up asking for them as they feel so much benefit!

Onion ear compresses

Home nursing - onion ear compresses for ear infection pain

  • Using 1/2 onion

  • Chop finely

  • Steam over boiling water (DO NOT use a microwave - it must be steamed to have therapeutic value) until it is somewhat clear and has a cooked aroma (normally about 3-5 minutes)

  • Remove from heat and wrap in a cotton cloth

  • Test on your own ear to make sure it is not too hot - it may need to be cooled for a short period of time

  • Place this over the child’s ear and secure in place with a beanie

  • Leave it there for as long as the child is comfortable
